The primary knee arthroplasty market is well served by many companies within the Orthopaedic Industry, so Northstar concentrate on pioneering new technology that can delay the need for a traditional knee replacement through early surgical intervention.
Northstar recently signed an agreement to launch the Orteq ActiFit implant in the UK. The world’s only licensed synthetic meniscal replacement, ActiFit is designed to help surgeons treat the 80% of meniscal tears that are irreparable. The current standard of care for these patients is a partial meniscectomy, a procedure that frequently results in cartilage damage and osteoarthritis.
For active patients that have already suffered cartilage damage, Northstar distribute the HemiCAP Femoral Condyle and Patello Femoral implants from Arthrosurface. Completely unique, these implants provide the bridge between biological treatment of cartilage damage and unicondylar or total knee replacements. The devices only resurface the affected area of the joint leaving the healthy anatomy intact. They also use the simple Arthrosurface intra-operative mapping technique to give a highly anatomic fit. Together, these features make the HemiCAP knee range highly appropriate for patients considered too young to receive a traditional knee replacement.
