Wrist Replacement
Fusion of the wrist has for many years been the standard treatment for advanced arthritis in this complex joint. Whilst this is effective in reducing pain, by very its nature fusion totally limits all movement in this important joint.
The SBi Re-Motion wrist replacement has been designed by Dr. Bill Cooney and Dr. Amit Gupta to provide pain relief equivalent to a fusion whilst at the same time restoring range of motion for the patient. The implant has a deep cup on the radial side to prevent dislocation, and utilises a mobile bearing on the carpal side to dissipate the forces that can cause loosening. It is also a bone sparing and anatomic design, offering many revision options should these become necessary in the future.
That said, the mid-term results of the SBi Re-Motion wrist have been excellent with no reported implant related revisions and very good functional results. As a result of this, a growing number of UK surgeons are now considering replacement of the wrist joint to be the preference for patients that would historically have received a fusion.
