Nerve Conduction Testing

Nerve conduction tests are used to detect and diagnose peripheral nerve injury, of the kind typically associated with carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome. The NHS target time for the treatment of these conditions is 18 weeks from GP appointment to surgery, but this is often difficult to achieve as patients typically require a lengthy referral to a neurophysiologist.

In 2008 NorthStar signed a distribution agreement with a Boston based company called NEUROMetrix. NEUROMetrix have developed a system that allows nerve conduction tests to be carried out by a clinician or a trained member of staff, with a comprehensive report returned via e-mail or fax within five minutes.

The system works using a variety of sensors that are connected to a hand held unit. After an automated test has been crried out, the hand held unit is placed in the docking station and the results are transmitted to NEUROMetrix. This data is then compared to healthy patients of the same age, height, sex and weight, and the report is generated and returned. If any data falls out of the expected range, the tests are quarantined and evaluated by a team of qualified Neurologists.
