Hallux Valgus and MIS Forefoot Surgery
Hallux Valgus is a condition where the Metatarsal joint has fallen out of alignment. This can result in arthritis due to the distribution of forces becoming uneven, and consequently a common surgical procedure in the forefoot is to carry out a corrective osteotomy.
Small Bone Innovations have recently released an excellent range of screws and staples that are designed primarily for use in forefoot osteotomy procedures. Known colloquially as the ‘Fix’ product range, it includes cannulated low compression screws, snap off compression screws, stainless steel staples and percutaneus snap off compression wires.
Performing a forefoot osteotomy using a minimally invasive technique is common in many parts of Europe, but this is a new type of surgery for the UK. Carried out using percutaneus burrs, MIS surgery provides a reduction in trauma to soft tissues, reduced scarring and less chance of infection. NorthStar are currently involved in setting up training centres for surgeons wishing to learn the technique.
